Annual Finance Bootcamp

On Saturday September 10th 2016, we will host our 8th Annual Finance Bootcamp for college/high school students at the BlackRock office in San Francisco. The goal of the LIF Finance Bootcamp is to educate college and high school students on the various careers/opportunities in the finance industry and to expand the pipeline of Latino professionals.

The event offers free admission for students and includes workshops from experienced professionals on topics such as private equity, real estate and asset management.  In addition, we will offer professional development sessions to help you prepare to break into the industry. Lastly, a post-event mixer with LIF members and corporate sponsors will be held for all attendees aimed to help you build an active professional network to provide you timely career and education opportunities.

Students are responsible for securing their own transportation and housing (if necessary) for the Finance Bootcamp unless specifically arranged with LIF prior to the event.

What time should I arrive?

Please arrive at 8:30 AM for check-in.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

You must bring your ID (driver's license or college/high school student ID) in order to check in with security and enter the building. There is no age limit to the event but students should be interested in the finance industry.

What is the dress code?

The dress code is business casual. Men: Slacks, long-sleeve button-down dress shirt, dress shoes (tie/suit jacket is optional). Women: Dress slacks/skirt, low heels/flats, blouse (suit jacket optional)

Attention students: This is a professional event! You will have the opportunity to meet real finance professionals so you want to be on your A-Game!

Is food provided?

A light breakfast and a catered lunch will be provided for all attendees (free of charge).

East Bay Latina Giving Circle Mixer

The Latino Giving Circle Network (LGCN) is a group of intergenerational individuals invested in improving the lives of Latinos in California! Each member of the LGCN pledges to donate at least $1,000 a year. After the Giving Circle hears from experts and a dynamic pitch from their top three organization choices, the members decide the amounts to be granted out.

Ms. Allwood has lived in Latin America and Europe and is fluent in Spanish. She has a degree in industrial engineering from Universidad Centroamericana in El Salvador and is an alumnus of the Stanford University Executive Program. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of Geographic Expeditions and on the San Francisco Council for Vital Voices. Get a head start — and begin building your resume — at BlackRock’s ‘Find Your Future Forum’, a one day program with the world’s largest asset manager for current undergraduate freshmen and sophomores from diverse groups. The New York event is held on April 25th, 2016 and the San Francisco event is held on May 2nd, 2016.

Latinos in Finance (LIF) is hosting its first event of 2016 next Tuesday, February 9th in partnership with the San Francisco ALPFA chapter. Latinos in Finance and ALPFA have invited FinTech (Financial Technology) leaders from our organizations to present on the current state and future of FinTech. 

FinTech's "disruption" permeates every financial activity from banking, to payments, to wealth management. Startups are re-imagining financial services while traditional financial giants are adapting with new innovative products and solutions.

The partnership between technology and financial services has evolved well-beyond online banking or automated teller machines (ATMs). FinTech has become the new competitor, servicer and disruptor for banks, investors and consumers.

Ms. Mantilla is flying down from NYC on October 7th to represent Latinos in Finance at the Social Capital Markets (SOCAP) 2015 conference in San Francisco. Finance Boot Camp for Students Sept. 26th

One of our flagship programs is the annual Finance Boot Camp for students. This boot camp continues to grow and improve thanks to a dynamic lineup of diverse speakers and workshops, as well as fantastic educational material like our Finance Boot Camp Report. The goal of the boot camp is to educate college and high school students on the various careers and opportunities in the finance industry and expand the pipeline of Latino professionals.

On Saturday, September 26th from 9am-3pm, we will host our 6th finance boot camp for up to 100 students at the BlackRock office in San Francisco. BlackRock, Charles Schwab and other Bay Area corporations are graciously sponsoring the event. The boot camp will include several workshops and presentations including an industry review, sub-industry workshops on private equity, real estate and asset management, and speed networking sessions. Students will enjoy a catered breakfast, lunch and a post-event mixer with LIF members and corporate sponsors.

Reaching 100+ Latina/o students interested in learning about finance on a Saturday is not easy, so we need your help. Please help us identify students for the Finance Boot Camp and encourage them to register on this page.

Latinas in Finance: Power Lunch with Vanessa Hartigan

Within our group of over 400 Latino professionals we have a very talented group of successful and visible women – Latinas! Our Latina leaders have created Latinas in Finance within our group and will be hosting events throughout the year tailored to Latinas in financial services.

With that, we are happy to kick off Latinas in Finance with a series of power lunches that will highlight Latina industry leaders from our group. The lunches will follow a consistent format where our guest speaker will review her personal background, career trajectory and current role. The lunches will last approximately an hour and a half where most of the time is dedicated to questions from those in attendance. We anticipate the type of questions to range from career advice to forward-looking industry thoughts.

The inaugural power lunch will highlight Vanessa Hartigan on Thursday, July 9th from 12-1:30 PM Pacific Time at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, 101 California Street in San Francisco. Vanessa is a Relationship Manager for Merrill Lynch’s Institutional business. Vanessa has 18 years of experience in financial services and has a MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business as well as a master’s in Development Economics and a bachelor’s in International Relations from Stanford University. Vanessa is also an active leader and mentor in Latinos in Finance.

Our first two Latinos in Finance Coffee Chats were exceptionally educational, enlightening and motivating. Our next chat will highlight socially responsible and impactful investing; an area of investment finance that has a long history yet has more recently been a focus of many industry articles and the press. With several Latinos in Finance members dedicated to and passionate about socially and environmentally responsible investing, we are excited to host Timothy Freundlich thisWednesday, April 15th from 3-4pm at ImpactHUB San Francisco (901 Mission St. at 5th St.). Tim Freundlich is President and Co-founder of ImpactAssets. He is also a Co-founder of Good Capital andMissionHUB.

While at the Calvert Foundation, Mr. Freundlich conceived of and launched a prototype of the Giving Fund – now a $200+ million impact investment-based donor advised fund that was spun out as ImpactAssets, which he co-founded and serves as President. Additionally, Mr. Freundlich co-founded and serves on the management board ofGood Capital, which is the General Partner of the Social Enterprise Expansion Fund LP and has started two social enterprises, the SOCAP Conferences, attracting more than 2,500 people annually, andImpactHUB (SF, Berkely, NYC, Philly and DC), co-working, meeting and community spaces for more than 2,000 social innovators and part of a global network of more than 60 ImpactHUBs across five continents with 20,000 members (and one opening every month somewhere in the world).

Mr. Freundlich received a BA from Wesleyan University with a major in Film, an MBA from the University of San Francisco. He lives in San Francisco with his wife Julie and sons Milo and Gus.  

Coffee Chat Series - Omar Aguilar Apr. 9th

We are happy to invite you to our second coffee chat of an ongoing educational series where we highlight industry leaders in finance. Our second chat will host Omar Aguilar thisThursday, April 9th from 4-5pm at Charles Schwab in San Francisco (215 Fremont Street at Howard St). Omar Aguilar, Ph.D., is Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Officer for Equities at Charles Schwab Investment Management.

To register, please email Latinos in Finance and Juan Antonio Barroso with your full name, phone number, current firm and title, and anticipated questions. Please register by Wednesday to ensure you are registered with building security. These coffee chats are informal, but private, and we will limit attendance to 50 individuals. We will confirm your reservation via email and do our best to manage a waiting list. If you are not able to attend this coffee chat or the registration is full, there will be several similar coffee chats this year.

The coffee chats will follow a consistent format where the guest speaker will review her/his personal background, career trajectory, and current role. Each coffee chat will last only one hour and most of the hour will be dedicated to questions from those in attendance. We anticipate the type of questions to range from career advice to forward-looking industry thoughts.

Latinos in Finance

Omar Aguilar joined Charles Schwab Investment Management, Inc., as senior vice president and chief investment officer, Equities in April 2011 where he is responsible for over $80 billion (as of 12/31/13) in equity and asset allocation mutual funds and separate account assets. He has over 20 years of broad investment management experience in the equity markets, including managing index, quantitative equity, asset allocation, and multi-manager strategies.

Prior to Charles Schwab Investment Management, Mr. Aguilar was with Financial Engines, where he was responsible for managing more than $40 billion in assets from leading retirement plan sponsors in the defined contribution market. Prior to joining Financial Engines, Mr. Aguilar was the head of Quantitative Equity for ING Investment Management, where he was responsible for building and developing the firm’s quantitative equity group, managing more than $20 billion in assets with 15 global active, index, and enhanced index strategies for pensions funds, variable annuities, and mutual funds. He joined ING in 2004 from Lehman Brothers, where he served as the head of quantitative research for its alternative investment management business. Prior to that, he was a director of quantitative research and portfolio manager with Merrill Lynch Investment Management and Bankers Trust.

Mr. Aguilar was a Fulbright Scholar at Duke University’s Institute of Statistics and Decisions Sciences, where he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. He completed a B.S. in actuarial sciences and a graduate degree in applied statistics from the Mexican Autonomous Institute of Technology (ITAM).

Leticia Miranda, MBA '93, was most recently a Senior Policy Advisor for the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) where she fought for economic security policy issues on behalf of Hispanics across the entire nation. NCLR works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans and is the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States.

The banquet will include a reception, dinner, award ceremony, and live entertainment.
