Women Negotiating in the Workplace


We have all heard about the gender wage gap, a serious issue that affects us all, mainly Latina and African-American women. But there is something that we can do- negotiate.

Join us to learn how to best advocate for yourself in the workplace, with a negotiations strategies workshop led by Prof. Jessica Notini. Prof. Notini is a Lecturer at Stanford Law School and Adjunct Professor at Mills College, UC Berkeley Law School, and UC Hastings School of Law.

The workshop will be followed by a panel of powerful female professionals, whom have broad experience with negotiations- Alexandra Spencer-Wong, Maya Tussing, and Maritza Rogers. Alexandra Spencer-Wong is a Product Manager at Captricity; Maya Tussing is a Chief Investment Officer at Alesco Advisors LLC; and Maritza Rogers is the Co-Founder of Athena Wealth Strategies.

The attendees will leave empowered with effective negotiations skills in their backpocket and the confidence to speak up for themselves and their counterparts.

The goal of the LIF Finance Boot Camp is to educate college and high school students on the various careers/opportunities in the finance industry and to expand the pipeline of Latino professionals.

The event offers free admission for students and includes workshops from experienced professionals on topics such as private equity, real estate and asset management. In addition, we will offer professional development sessions to help you prepare to break into the industry. Developing Your Financial Career in Today's Environment


Latinos in Finance hosted an event geared towards guiding experienced professionals in taking the next steps to develop their career. The event took place at the New York Life offices.


Alejandro Caminos


Alejandro started his career in financial services within the Private Client Services division of Lehman Brothers.

He went on to serve as Managing Director at DEPFA Bank and Vice President for KNN-Zions First National Bank, before establishing IPFC Group, which provided consulting services for development agencies, governments, and supranational entities, including the US Agency for International Development (USAID), European Union Water Commission, and the German Development Bank-GTZ. The work included assessing over 15 financing projects and 50 financial institutions, in over 20 countries.
He subsequently served as Vice President of Public Finance with SNW Securities in California, where he led the firm’s investment banking in California and Mexico.

Today, Mr. Caminos is a Financial Services Professional at New York Life, where he assists clients with personal finance and risk management. 

Giving back is a top priority. He serves on HSF’s San Francisco Advisory Council, is the Vice President and Chairman of the External Relations Committee of Latinos in Finance, and a Partner at the Risk and Value Creation Institute. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Escuela Bilingüe Internacional, an independent co-educational day school in San Francisco’s East Bay area.

His advice to others, including those who may be considering a higher education or career in financial services is simple: "Anything is possible. Never give up. In the face of adversity, keep going."

Carlos Rizo

Carlos joined the New York Life in May of 2015 as the Latino Market Manger and Recruiter.  Carlos was born and raised in Northern California in the middle of wine country.  Prior to joining New York Life, Carlos worked 5 years in the telecommunication industry as a sales representative.  Carlos is passionate about building strong ties within the Latino community of San Francisco by increasing financial literacy and awareness for long-term financial planning. 

In his spare time, he loves to travel, spend time with family, and attend San Francisco Giants games with his beautiful wife Jeniffer.  


Carlos Zapata, MSFA


Born and raised in Lima, Peru Carlos Zapata, MSFA has nineteen years of experience in the financial services industry, specializing in portfolio management, equity research analysis, and options.

Carlos spent the last eleven years as an independent financial advisor and portfolio manager at the firm he founded, PanAmerican Investments. Prior to that, he worked for GE Financial Advisors where he was recognized as the Top Financial Advisor in 2002. He started in the financial services industry with Prudential Securities in San Francisco.

Carlos enjoys soccer, cycling, reading, listening to music and spending time with his wife and two teen-aged boys.

He received an MS in Financial Analysis degree from the University of San Francisco, and a BA and BS from California State University East Bay.

Oscar Olivas


Oscar Olivas joined the U.S. High Yield team at Wells Capital Management in 2006 and is a senior analyst covering the energy and financial sectors.  Oscar also has extensive experience covering utilities, gaming and lodging, and media companies. Prior to his current position, Oscar was responsible for portfolio analytics in addition to supporting trading functions and client communications. He began his investment management career in 2004 at Wells Capital Management, where he spent two years on the marketing team. Oscar has earned dual bachelor’s degrees in business administration and Latin American studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a graduate of Wells Fargo’s Credit Management Training Program. He has earned the right to use the CFA designation.

Oscar spends his free time coaching his younger son’s soccer team, volunteering on the UC Berkeley LBSA Alumni Fund Board and actively engages in diversity focused events for the Walter A. Haas School of Business and Wells Fargo Asset Management.  

Fernando J. Cabrales 


Fernando is the COO of FinTech Portfolio and FinTech School. 

Previously, Mr.Cabrales led the Latin American Product team for research, product development and performance management efforts of BlackRock’s iShares® ETFs domiciled in Latin America. In addition, he was responsible for identifying opportunities to bring new asset classes and exposures to the region and implementing cross-border regulatory product approvals for Latin American pension funds to invest in iShares® ETFs domiciled in US, EMEA and Asia. 

Prior to his role with the BlackRock Latin American business, he was part of the Investment Operations team at Barclays Global Investors (acquired by BlackRock in 2009) responsible for managing a platform of Fixed Income global hedge funds.

Before joining Barclays Global Investors, Mr. Cabrales held several roles at Investors Bank & Trust including managing a team in Trading Operations and started his career in accounting for Private Equity Limited Partnerships.

Campus to Career Workshop @ Stanford

Latinos in Finance (LIF) hosted the first ever Campus to Career workshop at Stanford in partnership with the Stanford Latinx Business Association and BlackRock’s Multi-Cultural Network. Campus to Career is a quarterly workshop series developed by the LIF Professional Development Committee where panel discussions are hosted at Bay Area universities. The event, featured Sherwin Jiang (Morgan Stanley), David Lawson (BlackRock), Paul Gerard (BlackRock), Nishant Malapatti (BlackRock), Andrew Kaban (BlackRock) and covered investment banking and asset management. They discussed their career paths and provided practical advice for students looking to enter these sectors.

Save the date and join Latinos in Finance, the Society of Professional Spanish Engineers, and the Latinos Startup Alliance for an event focused on educating entrepreneurs interested in forming a startup of their own. There will be workshops teaching topics like how to turn an idea into a viable business, building the right team to turn your idea into a success, and when to pitch your business to angel investors/VC, as well as the opportunity to showcase what you learned in an ideation session.
